Perspectives: On Acting w/ Angela DiMarco

Angela DiMarco
Welcome to another edition of Perspectives: On Acting.  This week we feature another artist from the up and coming Mighty Tripod Productions in Seattle, WA.
I was introduced to Angela through her husband (and last week's Perspectives guest blogger) David S. Hogan.  Angela possesses a strong passion for acting and was kind enough to share some of her thoughts about the craft and her acting style/history in this week's Perspectives: On Acting.  Enjoy!

BHS-What are some key tenets of your acting process?

Angela-Staying physical fit/active and healthy. I found when I quit drinking, became a vegetarian and starting working out, I was happier. This put me in a clearer state of mind to focus on my craft. Having the energy to prepare for auditions and read scripts/plays left me feeling more motivated. As the years have gone by, I find that I am more selective with the work I audition for. I don't want to work just to work, I want to be proud of what I am a part of.

As much as I love the process of digging into a role, rehearsing a play or doing research on a story, I love the "finished product" even more. There would be no reason for my process without my audience. Getting on stage and hearing the audience laugh fills my heart with joy. Sitting in the back of a dark movie theatre while movie patrons watch my films, completes me. I do what I do, for them. My process is to continue working on my craft so I can keep telling stories to the world.

BHS-It's opening night. What is going through your head right before curtain?

Angela-I wonder where my mom is sitting?  Which reviewers came tonight? And I will say my first line out loud and "Kick butt and take names."

BHS-What do you enjoy more, film or stage acting?

Angela-BOTH! Because I get very different things from both mediums.

On stage, I love that your performance is LIVE, you hear the audience cry, scream, and laugh. Every show is a little different because you are in the NOW, lights are up and the Theatre is full and watching. The rush I get before I go on stage cannot be explained or replaced. The release I get when I bow to a wave of applause, humbles me and fills me with pride all at once.

For me, film is living in the moment and letting the camera catch every second of it. Film is in your face (literally) and doesn't lie. You must be HONEST, and be in the scene for a genuine performance. When I hear ACTION, the crew fades away, I look into the eyes of my scene partner and that LIFE begins. There is some relief in knowing, if one take doesn't work, you can shoot another. But nobody wants to be shooting one close up all day, so I prepare as if every take is the first and last. I love that you can share your labor of love once it's complete and see it for yourself.

BHS-Why do you keep going back to acting?

Angela-I meant it when I said it completes me. I cannot imagine my life without performance. My Great Grandmother would throw her slippers at the TV and (in Italian) say "That should be you, my baby, my Angel." I would perform for her in the nursery home, doing characters from Robin Leach to Hulk Hogan. I made her laugh everyday, until the day my mom told me "Nanny isn't with us any longer, she's your Angel now." At 8 years old I felt such a loss and I knew what I wanted to do. I had to make people smile, laugh, and love. So I started acting and haven't stopped since.

BHS-What advice do you have for young actors in small markets?

Angela-Be daring and make bold choices. Don't be shy and hide behind your talent.  Be honest in every moment on stage or screen. Be yourself, don't forget who you are and what you stand for.
BE MIGHTY!!!  This is a difficult career path but if you remember to ENJOY it.  If yo do that, it will be easier. Each audition is a job.  Every film, play, commercial or voice-over can lead to another job, don't be a DIVA on any set.

BHS-THREE must follows on Twitter...GO!
