As mentioned in my previous post, I am starting a new blog series that centers on different perspectives on the issue of acting scams. I am excited to present our first perspective on this issue with Jason Teresi, Director of Regional Services for Breakdown Services. Jason will be presenting an Actors Access and BHStudios seminar titled "Secrets of the Casting Process" on 9/19/12 in York, PA. We are excited to bring someone into the Central PA community who has so much experience and knowledge in the important elements of the acting business. More information about this event can be found here and here.
BIO AND INFORMATION
Jason Teresi was born and raised in Chicago. He attended DePaul Theatre School and Columbia College Theatre School. After graduating in 1995, Jason moved to Los Angeles to pursue his acting career. Aside from acting jobs, Jason worked at Showfax, which was soon bought-out by Breakdown Services. He was employed by both companies for over 8 years which gave him a unique look at other aspects of the entertainment industry and a better working knowledge of how Talent Agents and Casting Directors operate. In 2006, Jason moved back to Chicago and became the Director of Regional Services for Breakdown Services, his current role.

Here are Jason's perspective on the important issues surrounding acting scams:
- You always hear about actors being told to "spend your money wisely." What are some wise ways that actors can spend their money as they are starting out? Spend your money wisely by taking advantage of everything that is free. Stick with the basics because that is all you need to play this game. For example, you do not need to shell out $500 on new head shots. You need a friend that is a good photographer and knows lighting. If you need makeup, use a friend. All you need is a commercial shot and a theatrical shot.
- I've read on the SAG-AFTRA SCAMS page that online casting organizations are something to watch out for. What is the straight truth about online casting organizations? Do your research before you ever give money or sign on the line which is dotted. There are scams out there, some are obvious and some are not. You have to seriously look into these companies and make an informed decision. Legitimate CSA (Casting Society of America) or CSA caliber Casting Directors don't charge you to audition. Never pay to audition.
- How can actors understand what online casting sites are worth paying for vs. not? The ones worth paying for are the ones being utilized the most and have been around the longest. The best example I have is Breakdown Services. They have been in business for over 40 years and most of the industry (Casting Directors, Talent Agents, Actors, Producers, etc.) use them. I feel comfortable saying that if you ask anyone in this business if the have ever heard of or used Breakdown Services, Actors Access, or Showfax your answer will be a resounding YES. The legitimate sites that actors use to self submit all have their own costs, do the research and choose for yourself. Ask your fellow actors on the discussion boards and see what they say.
